Inert wastes
Inert muck away is defined as ‘waste that does not undergo any significant physical, chemical or biological transformations and is unlikely to adversely affect other matter with which it comes into contact’. Typically, inert muck away will include a variety of excavated materials.
Non-hazardous wastes
Non-hazardous waste includes soils from site clearance and excavations. It is vital to ensure that the waste is non-hazardous.
For large quantities of material or if a sites’ history includes previous industrial use, a site report should be included with an accredited laboratory analysis of the soils to demonstrate the non-hazardous/inert nature of the waste.
The Duty of Care and List of Wastes within the European Waste Catalogue is a good starting point in the determination of the composition of the waste. This is available on the Environment Agency website.
